Do you have new life?
Life is a journey. Life holds such promise. Life brings much joy. And life certainly comes with its fair share of heartache, pain, and disappointment. Do you ever find yourself saying, “I want a new life”?
We know how that feels. We are people who have experienced both the joy and the heartache of life. We have felt the sting of disappointment and the exhilaration of fulfilled expectations. We know what it is like to lose – and to win. We have wept at the grave and rejoiced in birth. And in the midst of all this, we have discovered a wonderful gift from God – new life in Jesus Christ!
Do you know what new life in Christ is about? To answer that, please ask yourself these two questions.
First , is your life “abundant”? New life is abundant life. Some people think that inviting Jesus into their lives will make them grumpy kill-joys. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Jesus offers so much, including genuine love, joy, and peace! Yes, we take life seriously – after all we only get one shot at it. But in Christ this new life is far from drudgery – it is abundant! Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) New life is full, abundant life!
Second, do you have eternal life? New life is eternal life. We have such a difficult time comprehending forever. But God has promised us eternal life in his son, Jesus Christ. Deep in our hearts, we know that there is more to this life than this life. The Bible says, “He [God] has also set eternity in the hearts of men.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) We know there is more. Every religion and philosophy that has existed since the creation of man has addressed the question of “What comes next?” because we know there is a “next”.
The Bible tells us what comes after this life. “…man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment…” (Hebrews 9:27). After death we face judgment. One thing alone will matter at that judgment. Did we receive the gift of new life that God offered us in Jesus Christ? At that judgment, it will be too late to “change our mind” or “mend our ways”. The only thing that will matter will be the answer to this question, “Did you receive the gift of new life, eternal and abundant, that God offered you in his Son, Jesus Christ?”
Hear and Believe
Jesus himself made this promise, "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24) Jesus is saying that right now, even as you read this, you can “cross over” from death into life! You can know your eternal destiny tomorrow because He offers you this gift of new life today!
Jesus says, “…whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life…” Friend, even as you read this, you have been hearing his word. Now you must hear with more than your eyes and ears. Hear with your heart. Consider the course of your life. Consider eternity. Consider his offer of new life – abundant and eternal. This offer is for you!
What must you do to receive this new life? Jesus says you must hear his word and believe him who sent Jesus.
What Jesus did for us
We are naturally alienated from God because of our sin and rebellion against Him and His ways. He is perfectly holy and we are completely sinful. Because of our sinfulness, even the good things we do are tainted and like “filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). But God loved us so much that He sent His one and only Son to become human like us. He alone lived a perfect life, never sinning or rebelling against God in any way. Thus, when those who hated him nailed him to the cross, he could die as a perfect sacrifice for us. He took our place by taking our punishment. Because of our sin, the Bible tells us that we deserve only death, judgment, and condemnation. On the cross, he died in our place. He took our judgment. He was condemned for us.
But that isn’t all! On the third day, he rose from the dead! He came back to life! When he resurrected, he proved that he has the power to take away the guilt of sin, change our hearts, and give us new life! He lives today! He lives forever, never to die again! Just as he had the authority to give up his life and take it up again, he has the power and authority to give new life to all who believe in him. To believe in him means to put our trust in him and all that he did for us on the cross and in rising from the dead. It means to do more than believe that this happened in history. It means to personally place our trust in Jesus and all he has done for us. Jesus gives new life!
Will you trust Jesus today?
Do you see the need for this new life that Jesus offers you? Are you ready to trust in him for new life? Would you like to accept the forgiveness of sin that God offers you through his Son? If you answered yes, please accept this invitation to invite Jesus to give you new life. Pray this, believing in your heart that God hears and answers, and he will give you new life – right where you are.
Dear God, I know that there is more to my life than what I have been experiencing. I confess that I am a sinner before you and do not deserve the new life you offer me. I believe that you are the source of life and so today I accept your invitation to receive new life – abundant and eternal from you. I accept this gift of new life by faith in Jesus your Son who died on the cross for my sins, and rose again from the dead. So right here, right now, I humbly ask you to forgive me, make me new, and give me the gift of eternal, abundant life through Jesus. Thank you God for this gift in Jesus Christ. Amen.
If you prayed this in faith, here is God’s unbreakable promise to you:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
