What is Baptism?

Baptism declares to the world you’ve trusted Jesus, joined God’s family, and made a commitment to follow Jesus, heart and soul. It’s pretty special!

Discover the meaning, significance, and purpose of baptism

Thinking about getting baptized but still have questions?
This page will help you understand why baptism is such a meaningful next step in following Jesus.

Why Get Baptized?
Following Jesus - Jesus Himself chose to be baptized. Though sinless, He humbled Himself in obedience and set an example for us to follow.

“You are my Son, chosen and marked by my love…” Mark 1:9 (MSG)

Obedience to His Teaching,
Baptism is a step of faith—an act of obedience responding to Jesus’ command.

“Go and make disciples… baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19–20

A Public Declaration of Faith
Baptism is a way to publicly declare your decision to follow Jesus. It’s a visible sign of an inward change.

“Whoever believes and is baptised is saved…” Mark 16:16 (MSG)

What Baptism Means
From Death to Life - Going under the water symbolizes dying to your old life; rising up again symbolizes the new life you’ve received in Christ.

Colossians 2:12–14 (MSG)

A Symbol of New Life
Baptism doesn’t save you—Jesus does. Baptism simply shows the world that you belong to Him. Think of it like a wedding ring: it’s an outward sign of an inward commitment.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“We… were buried with him through baptism… that we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4

Receiving God’s Blessing
In baptism, the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is spoken over your life. It marks your identity as a child of God.

Baptism and Community
A New Spiritual Family - Baptism isn’t only a personal moment—it joins you to the family of believers, the body of Christ.

“For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body.” 1 Corinthians 12:12–13

How Baptism Happens
By Immersion in Water - In Scripture, baptism is done by immersion—being fully dipped under water—just as Jesus was.

Matthew 3:16
Acts 8:38–39

Who Should Be Baptized?
Everyone who has chosen to follow Jesus.

Acts 2:41
Acts 8:12

We baptise children who are old enough to understand the meaning of baptism and make their own personal profession of faith.

When Should I Be Baptized?
In the New Testament, believers were baptized soon after placing their faith in Christ. Once you’ve decided to follow Jesus, baptism is the natural and encouraged next step.

Acts 2:41
Acts 8:35–39

“I’ve been baptized, so what’s next?”

Going public for Jesus takes boldness, and we want to encourage you to continue making bold moves for Jesus. At NewLife, we invite you to join us on the journey of faith as we follow Jesus together with the vision of bringing the fingerprint of Jesus to our community.

If you’ve been baptized, your next step may be to attend Starting Point or join a ROOTED group.
